Last start for Dale Jarrett

Dale Jarrett gets a fond send-off at beginning of All-Star Race.

Ned Jarrett said earlier today that he is glad that his son, Dale, is getting out of NASCAR now.

“I would hate to see him hang on for four or five more years or whatever the case might be,” the elder Jarrett told the Associated Press. “People have a tendency to remember you for the last thing you did. I want people to remember him as a champion and a winner in racing. If you hang on too long, sometimes people lose track of that.”

And at the pre-race ceremonies, Jarrett got a grand tribute: He took a lap in a UPS truck and his father gave the invocation before the race began.

As he stood there, head bowed, Jarrett’s chin quivered a bit and he wiped a tear away from his eye when the prayer was over.

At age 51, Jarrett leaves NASCAR with 32 wins, a points championship and three Daytona 500 wins.
