A Concord woman accused of embezzling more than $137,000 from Harrisburg’s Carolina International School was arrested Wednesday by Virginia police, Cabarrus County Sheriff’s deputies said.
Sandra Louise Vielbaum, 57, of 9584 Marquette St., Concord, was arrested at a Whiteville, Va., Days Inn Motel around 10 a.m., four hours away from Concord, police said.
Cabarrus Sheriff’s Detective Lewis Burgess said Tuesday that Vielbaum embezzled money from the Carolina International School over the course of two years. An arrest warrant was issued for Vielbaum on Tuesday, police said.
Burgess said Vielbaum will be charged with felony embezzlement, and the investigation is ongoing and other charges may be pending.
Vielbaum worked as the financial officer for the school and had been employed since 2004, school officials said. As financial officer, Vielbaum oversaw school funds and accounts, a police report states. School Director Richard Beall said the woman is no longer employed by the school.
Chief Deputy Paul Hunt of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said he was unsure when Vielbaum would be brought back to Concord, but detectives with the sheriff’s office were traveling to Virginia to retrieve the woman Wednesday afternoon.
Beall contacted police Friday after he noticed missing funds once an audit of school finances was complete, police said.
Hunt said the Secret Service is assisting because the agency has technologies vital to the investigation.
Parents and students of the school were told of the alleged embezzlement through an e-mail from school administrators.
Police said Vielbaum is also wanted by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant in Phoenix.
